Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96. The Queen died “peacefully” at her home in Balmoral, Scotland, on September 8, 2022. Her death brings to a close a reign that spanned seven decades and made her the most recognized woman in the world. As monarch, the Queen is automatically granted a publicly funded state funeral. Details for the funeral are expected to be released by the palace soon. Her eldest son, Charles, immediately became King of the United Kingdom upon the death of his mother. The national anthem for the U.K. will change to "God Save the King." All currency in the UK, known as the pound sterling, features the queen's portrait, which will eventually be replaced with the king's portrait. About 4.5 billion bank notes are in circulation with the queen's portrait, and it would take at least two years before the king appeared on them. There are mixed sentiments about the queen’s passing. Not everyone hailed her as a beacon of light, the ‘beating heart’ of the Commonwealth that binds 51 countries together. Will her demise usher in a new era ?
